Dr. Matthew Gdovin and his team have developed a cancer treatment that is fast, targeted and has been successfully tested in killing triple negative breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancers. We believe that this treatment can kill any cancer cell.
We use a compound called o-nitrobenzaldehyde (NBA) which, when hit with ultraviolet (UV) light, creates an acidic environment inducing cell suicide. NBA alone without photo activation has not shown any unfavorable effects, and because NBA only causes acidosis when activated by UV light, its effect can be confined to tumors without damaging surrounding tissue.

Our lab, run by Dr. Matthew Gdovin, is a research lab in the UTSA Department of Biology. We are undergraduate, master and PhD students who all contribute to the amazing things being accomplished. Everyone puts in their best effort toward making this therapy a reality.
According to the National Cancer Institute, “In 2016 (alone), an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 595,690 people will die from the disease.” If our treatment can be approved for clinical trials, the impact it would have on the world could be vast. It has the potential to treat every type of cancer regardless of the location and will not affect non-cancerous cells in the patient’s body—making it more humane than chemotherapy or radiation.
By donating, you will accelerate our treatment for people suffering from cancer. The $15,000 we need now will provide funding for chemicals and reagents, students’ time, lab equipment, toxicology studies, pharmacokinetics studies and other necessities for this life-changing research.
Your gift, when combined with others, will help us in the next step of our research, including conducting vital experiments to maximize the efficiency of this technology. For example, we need to determine the most effective dose and route of administration. The results of experiments like this will be essential in gaining the Food and Drug Administration approval for Phase 1 clinical trials.
The lab hopes to eventually further develop a novel targeted nanoparticle capable of treating any cancer. Creating these precise nanoparticles will ultimately cost $150,000.
Thank you for making our treatment a reality. Please share this message with anyone and everyone you know. Every gift, no matter the size, is appreciated. You are taking us one step closer to reaching our goal and one step closer to changing the world.
