The Civil Rights & Social Justice Experience

The Project

The UTSA Civil Rights & Social Justice Experience is a multi-dimensional experience that includes a 6-day bus trip through Jackson, MS, Atlanta, GA, and Memphis, TN, visiting landmarks of the civil rights movement, participating in the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr March, and hosting a reflection event that is open to the public. Your gift will help students cover the cost of the 6-day itinerary. Our student participants are each personally investing $150 in this trip, and we are challenging each of them to raise a matching amount through their personal networks.

Highlight destinations will include The Mississippi Museum of Civil Rights, the Freedom Riders Museum, the King Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the tombs of Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, as well as the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

The Impact

The Civil Rights & Social Justice Experience immerses students into the living history of the Civil Rights Movement, providing them a unique opportunity to learn about the movement from those who lived it. They will also learn to develop strategies to help solve contemporary social justice issues.

Who We Are

The UTSA Student Leadership Center serves as a comprehensive, centralized connection point for students, staff and faculty to access leadership opportunities on campus and in the greater San Antonio community. Regardless of where you are in your leadership journey, by taking advantage of the Center's resources, you will develop into a leader who is committed to life-long learning, community engagement and active citizenship.

Thank you for supporting the students important, historical journey through the heart of the Civil Rights movement. Everyone who gives will receive a personal thank you card and photo from the trip as well as an invitation to the premiere of the Civil Rights & Social Justice Experience documentary and reflection event.
