Ruben Tey Memorial Scholarship
Ruben Tey '04 was a "non-traditional" student. After dropping out of school at 17 to support his young family, he began college again at 42 studying Kinesiology and Physical Education at UTSA. Ruben truly believed every child should have an opportunity for an education. A man of his word, he invested not just in his own children, but the children who passed through his classrooms, as well, teaching them that hard work and education would go a long way. Sadly, Ruben passed away in March 2018 after a battle with cancer.
Carrying on his legacy, his daughter April Tey Brown is working to establish the Ruben Tey Memorial Scholarship for Education. "He ended up dropping out of school to support me and my sister, sometimes working two jobs. The whole time, he was determined to get back to school and continue his education...His determination was an inspiration to me. He never gave up no matter how hard it got." says April.
The scholarship will be available to full-time undergraduate students in the College of Education and Human Development who are actively pursuing a teaching certification.
Gifts of any size bring us closer to our goal. Will you honor Ruben's legacy by supporting future educators with a gift today?
