Who We Are
Society One Nine is a group of architecture students who use digital methods to create visual information. We focus on digital fabrication techniques through computer design.
Our Project
This semester, Society One Nine has the honor to design and showcase artwork in downtown San Antonio for the entire community to see. We will design and build a public architectural installation mounted prominently on the Majestic Theater limestone facade facing East Houston Street. Over the span of a year, thousands of people come and go from the garage, adjacent to the Majestic Theater, to walk down Houston Street. For six months, people will be stopped in their tracks by the installation Society One Nine will design and build.
Society One Nine is asking for your help to provide additional funding for materials--gifts of any amount will make a difference.
As a preliminary design proposal, the students have come up with great ideas such as looking into ways to make the structure move, without interfering with physically moving parts. One idea is to use fiber optics. That way, the movement can come solely from the light passing through the structure. Some material suggestions to achieve this are a semi-transparent structure, like PVC with the fibers securely attached inside the structure. The installation will capture the eye, not only because it is beautiful, big, and has movement, but also because it is connected to the wall. It will connect to the site and be a part of it…not just to cover the wall, but to make the best of it.

Quienes somos
“Sociedad Uno Nueve” es un grupo de estudiante de arquitectura que utilizan métodos digitales para crear información visual. Nos enfocamos en las técnicas de fabricación digital a través del diseño del ordenador.
Nuestro proyecto
Este semestre, “Sociedad Uno Nueve” tiene el honor de diseñar y armar una obra que estará en exhibición en el centro de San Antonio. Vamos a diseñar y construir una instalación arquitectónica pública montada de forma destacada en la fachada de piedra enseguida del Teatro “Majestic” mirando hacia el Este de la calle Houston. A lo largo de un año, miles de personas van y vienen desde el garaje del Teatro y caminan por la calle Houston. Durante seis meses, la gente se detendrá a observar la instalación creada por la Sociedad Uno Nuevo.
“Sociedad Uno Nueve” esta pidiendo su ayuda para proporcionar fondos adicionales para los materiales, donaciones de cualquier tamaño harán la diferencia.
Como una propuesta de diseño preliminar, los estudiantes han descubierto grandes ideas como la búsqueda de medios para que la estructura tenga movimiento, sin tener que mover las partes físicamente. Una idea que vino a la mente fue la fibra óptica, y como el movimiento puedo surgir únicamente de la luz atravesando la estructura. Algunas sugerencias de materiales para lograr esto seria una estructura semitransparente, como el PVC con las fibras unidas seguramente en el interior de la estructura.
“El Distrito 1 está encantado de colaborar con AIA para proporcionar la oportunidad de que estudiantes de arquitectura en SAC y UTSA puedan exhibir sus obras de arte a la comunidad,” dijo el concejal Roberto Treviño de San Antonio. “El Garaje Houston Street es muy visible y proporcionar el escenario perfecto para destacar su visión creativa.” “La instalación capta el ojo no soló porque es hermoso, grande o con movimiento, sino también porque realmente conecta con la pared. Debe conectarse con el sitio y sentirse como parte de él… no soló para cubrir la pared, pero para hacerlo mejor.”
