Roadrunner Racing Competes in Lincoln

The Project

Formula SAE is a competition designed to emulate a small automotive manufacturing company. Our job is to develop a small Formula-style race car for the non-professional weekend track driver. The prototype race car will evaluated for its potential as a production item through market studies and business cost analyses for the target consumer. Each university’s student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a set of requirements, which ensures diligent and safe engineering practices and promotes clever problem solving. This project accurately simulates the engineering environment that most SAE members will experience in their future career.

Last year, at the 2015-2016 FSAE International Competition, we placed 30th out of 80 teams. This year our goal is to finish in the top 10. We need your support to get to Lincoln, Nebraska and help us achieve our goal.

Who We Are

We are Roadrunner Racing, UTSA’s student chapter of Society of Automotive Engineers. Our particular chapter prides itself on resourcefulness and elegance, and is capable of many achievements with limited support. The student members of UTSA SAE are entirely responsible for funding the project, by either acquiring sponsorships or donating out of our own pocket. Our in-house financing allows us to source and purchase the necessary tools, materials and parts to build the car. The fact that our organization’s members perform all of these functions is unique in the student SAE community. We welcome the challenge to expand our portfolio of learning and overcome obstacles when they arise. This can be seen in the performance in the 2016 Formula SAE International Competition, in which we designed the lowest costing vehicle, beat UT Austin and completed all but one event.

The Impact

SAE promotes careers and excellence in all aspects of the engineering profession. Formula SAE takes students of all majors out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work experiences such as researching, designing, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, managing and financing. As a result, our organization generates interest in the field of engineering among high school students, UTSA students, community college students planning to transfer to UTSA and the general community.  When our members graduate, the community is provided with a workforce that has a unique set of skills and work ethic.

Thank you for your support! In our pursuit of success, we are so grateful to those who support our interests and desire to learn.
