Global Brigades (GB) is the largest, student-led, nonprofit health and sustainable development organization in the world. Participating student and professional volunteers empower communities in developing countries with sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and environment, while respecting local culture.
The UTSA chapter systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that improve the quality of life for over 500,000 community members in under-resourced communities through partner organizations in Ghana, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
Our team will travel to Nicaragua this summer and assist in developing sustainable health initiatives to provide relief where there is limited access to healthcare. Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every three to four months where hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
As volunteers we will spend nine days in a small Nicaraguan community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment, as well as access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care, as necessary.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to put skills to practice by taking patient vitals, obtaining patient history, and evaluating current symptoms. We will shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in the community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses.
