Social Work Partnership With Haven for Hope

The Project

Positive Development involves a group of formerly homeless women who are part of the Center for Health Care Services (CHCS) Wellness Program and living on the Haven for Hope campus.  This program is designed to equip clients with the tools and support that will allow them to live independently in the community, without cycling back into homelessness.

Each of the women participating in the project has a unique story to tell about becoming homeless and the factors that have prevented them from securing permanent housing.  All of them have experienced some form of extreme trauma such as serious physical or sexual assault, witnessing severe injury or death, being involved in a life-threatening accident, or having combat experience in a war zone. Many of them have turned to alcohol and drugs to help blunt the effects of these experiences, and this in turn, has served as a barrier to obtaining needed services.

Using a strengths-based perspective, the UTSA students will help empower the women to rebuild their self-esteem and self-confidence through a series of mind, body, and spirit “makeover activities”.

The project is a collaborative effort between CHCS, Haven for Hope, and the UTSA Department of Social Work.

Project Impact

The primary impact of the project is to help create a success experience for formerly homeless women as they move into permanent housing in the community.  A secondary impact is the transformational learning experience for the students involved in the project. Finally, the project serves to strengthen the community through the unique gifts and talents that the formerly homeless women bring to the table.

What Your Gifts Will Do

Your gifts will make it possible to secure materials and supplies for the various mind, body, and spirit “makeover activities”, purchase clothes for the women to wear to the final project event (a candle light dinner), underwrite the cost of the final event, and cover miscellaneous out-of-pocket expenses.

Homelessness is a condition, not a lifestyle. They did not become homeless overnight, and it will take time and resources to get them into permanent housing. This project is a small beginning, but we need your help to make it a success. Please share the story of this project with the members of your social network and encourage them to do the same. Every contribution counts!

Thanks for Your Support!

Your support of this project is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. Your willingness to contribute speaks to your commitment to making the world a better place in which to live.
