The University of Texas at San Antonio has over 5,000 military-affiliated students and nearly 300 faculty and staff who served, one of the largest such populations in a Texas university. We often hear of institutions and companies that are “veteran-friendly,” but UTSA strives to go further than that and be veteran-inclusive. We recognize that being a veteran is not simply a job status, it is a membership in a unique and diverse culture.
UTSA commencement is large, public event that includes indoor pyrotechnics. Some veterans are uncomfortable with this scale of activity. The aim is to improve inclusivity by providing a ceremony that they may choose to attend instead of altogether avoiding such a celebration of their accomplishment. By having an on-campus ceremony for veterans and their family members, separate from commencement, veterans will have a safe and comfortable opportunity to celebrate their achievements as well as a personalized cord presentation experience.
We're all familiar with the concept of a legacy—something of value passed down or received from someone who came before us. A Veteran’s legacy is often their selfless leadership, their sacrifice and dedication to others. Memorial Day honors those who’s legacy includes the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. You can honor the memory and legacy of a veteran in your life by making as gift in their name or memory to support hundreds of UTSA veterans building legacies of their own.
“Having a veteran ceremony will allow me to actually attend. The Alamodome will be too much with my disability to have to walk across the parking lot, sit, stand, etc. This provides a smaller more comfortable opportunity for me to celebrate my achievement.” - Meghan B.
“Having a veteran ceremony allows veterans to feel their self-purpose again, as they did while in service to our country.” - Kegan A.
“We (M.A.C.) work together for our students and community. The cord will represent and unify our organization for a lifetime. Having a veteran cording ceremony would greatly appreciate our hard work.” - Priscilla L.
"Most veterans have issues with prolonged standing or sitting and a smaller commencement ceremony would elevate that issue for our veterans, it would also elevate stress for veterans and for their service dogs." - John B.
Will you give to allow student-veterans the opportunity to celebrate their achievements in comfort? Your tax-deductible gift will go to support the veteran ceremony. Any additional funds raised will be used to support future military-affiliated student activities.
